Teachers’ Salary Scale & Benefits for 2008-09
Figures listed are for the 2008-09 School year.
SALARY
Entry-level salary determination
A teacher’s entry level is based upon years of full-time teaching experience following a 4-year Bachelor’s degree or equivalent. A step is credited for each year of full-time classroom teaching. The maximum entry level is step 10. The maximum salary level is step 15.
Salary increases in subsequent years
Upon contract renewal, teachers move up one step for each year of teaching. The maximum salary level is 15.
Advanced degree supplement
A teacher receives a supplement to base salary in recognition of advanced degrees that meet the following criteria:
(1) The advanced degree is in the field of education.
(2) The advanced degree is a minimum of 30 credits.
The supplement for a Master’s degree is HK$2,000 per month. The supplement for a Ph.D. is HK$3,850 per month.
Pay schedule and currency
Staff is paid on the last day of each month, either by payroll check or by direct deposit. Forms to arrange the direct deposit are available from the Business Operations Manager. All salaries are paid in Hong Kong dollars which is approximately 7.8 HK$ to 1 US$

During the school year all Co-teachers are entitled to regular school holidays. In addition to the salary Co-teachers receive the following benefits

-Housing allowance for 2007/08 is HK$9,400 per month per single contract, HK$14,000 for a teacher with a dependent and $16,000 for a teaching couple. This is adjusted each year based on a market index determined in June prior to arrival.
-Economy airfare from home of record to Hong Kong and return at the successful conclusion of contract for self and one dependent per teaching contract
-Economy airfare to and from home of record for summer leave for self and one dependent per teaching contract
-Matching 10% retirement contribution of base salary paid into pension fund with investment options
-10 days sick leave per annum
-International medical and hospitalization insurance (including basic dental) for self and one dependent per teaching contract
-Worker's compensation insurance as per Hong Kong law
-Tuition free HKA enrollment for 1 dependent child per individual contract (i.e. Teaching couples/2 dependent children)
-All employment visa and residency fees for teachers and qualified dependents
-Relocation allowance of HK$8,000 per single teaching contract paid in cash on arrival in Hong Kong. HK$12,000 per teaching couple
-Annual Professional Development Allowance of HK$8,500 which can be accumulated for up to three years
-Free Mandarin language lessons
-Baggage and Shipping Allowance of HK$8000 per teaching contract upon presentation of receipts to and from Hong Kong
-Up to 5 days leave for attending a recruiting fair for non-returning faculty upon approval of the Director
-Bereavement Leave (a death in the immediate family) of 5 days with airline tickets
-Personal Leave up to 2 days per annum upon approval of Director

Co-teachers at Hong Kong Academy assume many teaching duties and are seen as an integral part of the teaching and learning program in the Primary School Section. Each class section in the Primary School has an assigned Co-teacher who works closely with the class teacher.
Entry level salary determination
A co-teacher’s entry level is ranked as Step 0 when joining Hong Kong Academy. A step is credited for each year of a full-time co-teacher. The maximum salary level is step 8.
Upon contract renewal, co-teachers move up one step for each year working with class teachers in Hong Kong Academy. The maximum salary level is 8.
