THE PHYSICAL EDUCATION PROGRAM AT HONG KONG ACADEMY

At HKA, there is a specialist Physical Education teacher who works, each week, with all students from K3 to Middle School.
The aim of the Physical Education program is to provide students with the relevant physical and health related skills, knowledge and understanding to lead a healthy and active lifestyle. It also fosters social skills and good sporting behavior. This is done through a combination of inquiry and direct teaching.
Hong Kong Academy has an indoor sports hall and a rooftop area. Where more specialized facilities are required, Primary and Middle school students are taken by bus to local venues. Sports days take place at a local stadium.

The Primary Program
The program, operating within the Primary Years Programme (PYP) curriculum framework, concentrates on seven main strands:
-Body Control
-Spatial Awareness
-Adventure Challenge
-Athletics
-Movement to Music
-Gymnastics and
-Health Related Activities.
Wherever possible, the work undertaken in the PE lessons supports the units of inquiry in the classroom and sometimes leads them.

Assessment
In Early Childhood and Primary, assessments are made and reported upon using the following Primary Years Programme (PYP) criteria:
-Body Control and Spatial Awareness
-Adventure Challenge
-Athletics
-Movement to Music
-Games
-Gymnastics
-Health Related Activities
Each statement is broken down into more subject specific criteria directly relating to each PE strand at each year level.

Early Childhood and Primary lesson structure
Students K5 to Year 5 attend the indoor sports hall as a class. K3 and K4 have lessons on the rooftop of the Primary building. Early Childhood classes are accompanied by their co-teachers. Lessons vary in length depending on the age of the students. Children work both as a class and in groups depending on the focus of the lessons.

The Middle School Program
Physical Education is not an elective and takes place for two sessions per week for all students. The programme provides students with the opportunities to further enhance their foundation skills and understandings and to become good team members and sporting ambassadors.

Assessment
In Middle, assessments are made and reported upon using the following criteria:
-Knowledge and Understanding
-Movement and Composition
-Social Skills
-Personal Engagement
Each statement is broken down into more subject specific criteria directly relating to each Physical Education strand.

Middle School lessons
In the Middle School, students attend two lessons per week in the Physical Education hall or on the rooftop.
